Explore the journey that has shaped our company into a trusted leader in the nation’s energy sector.
FOCOL’s story began in 1967, when Freeport Oil Company Limited was established by the Grand Bahama Port Authority to supply petroleum products to a rapidly growing industrial and commercial hub in Freeport, Grand Bahama. From its earliest days, Freeport Oil played a vital role in powering development—supporting transportation, commerce, and daily life while helping to fuel the economic momentum of the island.
A defining chapter unfolded in 1982, when a group of Bahamian investors acquired the company. This transition marked more than a change in ownership; it signaled the emergence of a proudly Bahamian enterprise guided by long-term vision, resilience, and national purpose. Under local stewardship, Freeport Oil expanded its operational capabilities, introducing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution and strengthening its retail petroleum presence. These investments deepened the company’s connection to communities across Grand Bahama and laid the foundation for broader national growth.
As ambitions expanded, so did FOCOL’s footprint. In 2006, the Group took a transformational step with the acquisition of Shell Bahamas Limited. Through this milestone transaction, FOCOL became the official Shell licensee for The Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands, combining global brand strength with local ownership and leadership. To manage this expanded national and regional platform, Sun Oil Limited was established as a holdings and operating subsidiary, overseeing retail and bulk petroleum distribution across multiple islands and markets. This evolution positioned FOCOL as an integrated energy supplier delivering Shell Quality Fuels and Lubricants trusted worldwide for performance, reliability, and protection.
To support growth at scale and ensure consistent operational standards, FOCOL strengthened its organizational structure through focused subsidiaries. In 2007, O.R. Services Limited (ORSL) was established to manage and operate the Group’s retail service station network, reinforcing commitments to safety, reliability, and service excellence.
Building on this foundation, a strategic consolidation was approved by the Parent, and on October 1, 2021, Convenience Retailing Limited (CRL) was incorporated following the merger of ORSL and Sun Services Limited (SSL). Through this realignment, CRL assumed responsibility for all retail service station operations, assets, and properties, eventually extending its finance and operational management responsibilities to Grand Bahama. Guided by the Group’s core principles, CRL continues to enhance site performance, customer experience, and operational efficiency across its markets.
As part of its continued growth journey, FOCOL evolved into a broader energy and infrastructure partner through BUC, strengthening its contribution to critical utility services that underpin national energy security. This evolution reflected FOCOL’s growing responsibility not only as a fuel supplier, but as a broader energy and infrastructure partner helping to safeguard energy security and support the continuity of communities and industries.
As its energy portfolio evolved, FOCOL embraced the global energy transition through the establishment of Bahamas Solar and Renewables Company Ltd. (BSR). As a full-service renewable energy company, BSR is dedicated to powering the future of The Bahamas with clean, resilient energy solutions. The company develops and delivers renewable energy projects across utility-scale, commercial and industrial, micro-grid, and distributed energy markets, supporting clients through the full project lifecycle from development and construction to long-term operation and maintenance.
Today, in 2026, the FOCOL Group stands as a testament to what a sustained vision, strong governance, and Bahamian leadership can achieve. From its origins as a single fuel distributor in Freeport to a diversified energy group with national and regional reach, FOCOL continues to fuel growth for people, empower communities, and responsibly power the future guided by its heritage, strengthened by its companies, and inspired by what lies ahead.
